What an IT Project Taught Me About Simplicity

Early in my career, I equated sophisticated solutions with complex technology. More features, more integration points, and more moving parts seemed like signs of a better solution.

A project for a growing business changed that view. My team proposed an infrastructure upgrade with extensive customization. On paper, it looked impressive. During deployment, training became burdensome, maintenance became costly, and reliability suffered.

Step back and redefine success

We paused and reconsidered what the client needed. The solution had to support their work and growth. Complexity was getting in the way.

1. We made simplicity and reliability central to the definition of success.

2. We removed redundant technologies and consolidated where practical.

3. We prioritized a more intuitive experience for the people using the system.

The resulting approach was easier to maintain and better suited to the client's work. That experience reshaped how I evaluate technology choices.

Ask what the team will have to live with

Every integration and customization creates something to understand, support, and eventually change. Sometimes that complexity is necessary. It should have a clear purpose.

Before approving a design, ask who will maintain it, how employees will learn it, and what can be simplified without compromising the requirements.
