Turn IT Spending into a Business Plan

IT is a necessary operating expense, but it can also support a clear business plan. The difference starts with the outcome you want to achieve.

In my years of consulting, I have seen how much easier technology decisions become when the team agrees on the business need first.

Look for practical business value

  • Productivity: Reduce repeated work and make everyday tasks easier to complete.

  • Resilience: Address security gaps and improve the ability to recover from disruption.

  • Customer experience: Make it easier for people to find information, request help, or complete a transaction.

  • Decision-making: Give the right people useful, trustworthy information.

Ask three questions before investing

  1. What problem are we solving? Describe the impact on staff, customers, or operations.

  2. Who will own the change? Include implementation, training, ongoing support, and decisions after launch.

  3. How will we know it helped? Choose a useful measure and a date to review progress.

Build a plan you can revisit

Prioritize the changes that support your goals and fit your resources. Record the assumptions behind each decision so the plan can adapt when the business changes.
